STAFF COMMENTS:
AB 113 provides that each poet laureate shall serve for a
term of two years and may not serve more than two terms.
The bill allows the Arts Council to establish an
appropriate stipend and any necessary expenses.
Additionally, AB 113 allows the Council to solicit and
receive gifts, donations, bequests, grants of funds or any
other revenues and expend those moneys to increase the
stipend of the Poet Laureate.
Staff recommends that the appointment of the Poet Laureate
be subject to Senate confirmation.
California's most recent Poet Laureate, Charles Garrigus
was appointed by a Legislative Resolution in 1966 and held
the position until his death in October 2000.
