LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST AB 355, Havice. School community policing. Existing law establishes the School Community Policing Partnership Act under which grants are awarded on a competitive basis to county offices of education, school districts and consortia of school districts and county offices of education that develop and implement plans that demonstrate a collaborative and integrated approach for implementing a system of providing safe and secure environments through community policing. Existing law prohibits the use of grant funds to fund school resource officers. This bill would prohibit use of grant funds to fund school resource officer positions created on or before January 1, 2003. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. Section 32296.8 of the Education Code is amended to read: 32296.8. Nothing in this article may be construed to require a school district or a county office of education to hire police officers as a condition of receiving a grant under the School Community Policing Partnership Grant Program. Grant funds may not be used to provide funding for school resource officer positions in existence on or before January 1, 2003.
