Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 77--Relative to National
Library Week.
LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST
ACR 77, Simitian. National Library Week.
This measure would observe the celebration of National Library
Week commencing April 6, and would applaud the positive and vital
impact of public libraries, librarians, and library workers, and
thank them for enriching the lives of residents and helping to make
our state an exceptional place to live, learn, and work.
WHEREAS, National Library Week is being celebrated in public
libraries throughout California from April 6, 2003, through April 12,
2003; and
WHEREAS, California's public libraries are centers for education,
information, and entertainment; and
WHEREAS, Public libraries and librarians advance teaching and
learning by helping students, faculty, and researchers obtain the
best, most accurate and complete information; and
WHEREAS, Our state's public libraries are changing and dynamic
places, offering computers, Internet access, e-mail reference, and
other innovative services to connect their users with ideas and
information; and
WHEREAS, Public libraries provide technology training for patrons
of all ages and help to bridge the "digital divide," for those who do
not have access to technology at home or at school; and
WHEREAS, Students are a rapidly growing group of library users,
visiting the state's public libraries after school and on weekends
for homework assistance and for materials to use in school
assignments; and
WHEREAS, Public libraries are important community educational
resources, providing innovative programs for youth, including, but
not limited to, preschool literacy readiness, Toddler Times, Summer
Reading Program, Homework Help Centers, Grandparents and Books, and
Reach Out and Read in conjunction with pediatric clinics; and
WHEREAS, Public libraries preserve our cultural heritage, inform,
and inspire; and
WHEREAS, More than 19 million people use California's public
libraries annually; and
WHEREAS, California public libraries provide equal and economical
services and, in many cases, serve as a community's only public point
of access to resources for learning; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
thereof concurring, That the Legislature of the State of California
acknowledges and participates in the celebration of National Library
Week commencing April 6, 2003, applauds the positive and vital impact
of public libraries, librarians, and other library workers, and
thanks them for enriching the lives of residents and helping to make
our state an exceptional place to live, learn, and work; and be it
further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of
this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
