BILL NUMBER: AB 1520 VETOED DATE: 09/29/2004 To the Members of the California State Assembly: I am returning Assembly Bill 1520 without my signature. This bill would create the California Veterans Memorials Commission, and authorize the design, construction and dedication of veterans memorials. The bill would provide that all funding for the memorials and for the operation and support of the Commission would be from private contributions. While I strongly support the men and women of California who have served this Nation and believe there is no higher priority than honoring and caring for our veterans, this bill is unnecessary. California has already established the California Veterans Memoriala memorial to all California Veteransin Capitol Park. In addition, California already has agencies, boards and commissions with overlapping and related responsibilities that should be consolidated to make government more efficient, effective and transparent. The enactment of AB 1520 would add a new state commission rather than consolidate or reduce the number of existing commissions. For this reason I am returning this bill without my signature. Sincerely, Arnold Schwarzenegger
