   Relative to the Martin A. Matich Highway.


	LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


   ACR 156, Emmerson  Martin A. Matich Highway.
   This measure would designate that portion of State Highway Route
30 from the existing interchange of State Highway Route 30 and State
Highway Route 215, in the City of San Bernardino at post mile 21.84,
to the existing interchange of State Highway Route 30 and State
Highway Route 10, in the City of Redlands at post mile 33, as the
Martin A. Matich Highway.
   This measure would also request the Department of Transportation
to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing that special
designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources
sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs.




   WHEREAS, Martin A. Matich is deserving of special public
commendation in recognition of his exemplary career and of his civic
achievements as a council member and a citizen of California's Inland
Empire; and
   WHEREAS, Martin A. Matich served as a Colton City Council member
from 1956 to 1958, and served as the mayor of the City of Colton from
1958 to 1960; and
   WHEREAS, Martin A. Matich's productive career includes serving
since 1950 as the president and then the chairman of Matich
Corporation, which has been a California company since 1918 and which
was founded by his father, John Matich; and
   WHEREAS, Martin A. Matich has helped the Matich Corporation become
a leader in providing the finest highways, airports, and public
works projects for over 80 years; and
   WHEREAS, Martin A. Matich also has served his community and state
as a member of the Loma Linda University Medical Center, the Loma
Linda University Children's Hospital, and the St. Bernardine's
Medical Center; as a member of the board of the National Orange Show
Foundation; as a member of the board of the Boy Scouts of
America-Inland Empire Council; as a member of the board of the Girl
Scouts of America-San Gorgonio Council; and as a member and past
director of the San Bernardino Chamber of Commerce; and
   WHEREAS, This exceptional community leader has provided endowed
scholarships to the University of Notre Dame under the names of the
John Matich Undergraduate Scholarship and the Joyce Athletic
Scholarship, and has provided a scholarship to the University of
Redlands in the name of Williamina Matich; and
   WHEREAS, It is proper and fitting that Martin A. Matich be honored
for his exemplary career, as well as for his constant record of
leadership on state transportation issues and, in particular, his
long-term support for the construction of the Foothill Freeway; now,
therefore, be it
   Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
thereof concurring, That the portion of State Highway Route 30, which
is to be renamed State Highway Route 210, from the existing
interchange of State Highway Route 30 and State Highway Route 215, at
post mile 21.84 in the City of San Bernardino, to the existing
interchange of State Highway Route 30 and State Highway Route 10, at
post mile 33 in the City of Redlands, be officially designated as the
"Martin A. Matich Highway"; and be it further
   Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to
determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the signing
requirements for the state highway system, showing that special
designation, and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources
sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs; and be it
further
   Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of
this resolution to the Department of Transportation and to the author
for appropriate distribution.
