SOURCE : Author DIGEST : This resolution designates the City of Santa Cruz as Surf City, U.S.A. ANALYSIS : This resolution finds: 1. The City of Santa Cruz, in Santa Cruz County, was the site of the first surfing in California, when three Hawaiian princes surfed on locally milled redwood boards at the mouth of the San Lorenzo River in 1885. 2. Santa Cruz has 11 world-class surf breaks, including the point breaks over rock bottoms near Steamer Lane and Pleasure Point, which create some of the best surfing waves in the world. 3. Santa Cruz is home to the Lighthouse Surfing Museum at Steamer Lane, which continues to be staffed by docents CONTINUED SCR 60 Page 2 such as Harry Mayo and others from the Santa Cruz Surfing Club who have surfed Santa Cruz waves since the 1930s. 4. Local resident Jack O'Neill invented the wet suit in Santa Cruz. 5. Santa Cruz hosts several surf contests drawing international participants each year, including the O'Neill Cold Water Classic, the International Longboard Association contest, and many others. 6. The Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf is home to the annual "Woodies on the Wharf" event that brings hundreds of classic surfing "woodies" from all over North America to Santa Cruz each July. 7. Santa Cruz is the site of the extraordinary sculpture of the California Surfer on West Cliff Drive overlooking Steamer Lane. 8. Santa Cruz is home to several businesses which, as early as the 1930s, have incorporated "Surf City" in their names, such as Surf City Produce and Surf City Coffee. 9. Santa Cruz is well known around the world as a center of a precious, but hard to define "surf culture" that reflects a "laid-back" and relaxed lifestyle and culture. 10.California's surfing history is deeply interwoven in the fabric of our rich and vibrant culture, and is reflected by the many surfing communities located along it's coastal shoreline that cumulatively contribute to the invaluable preservation and celebration of California's surfing tradition. This resolution designates the City of Santa Cruz as "Surf City U.S.A."
