LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST SB 1385, Vincent School employees: termination. Existing law permits a school district or county superintendent of schools to reduce its number of employees, subject to certain requirements, if its pupil enrollment drops below certain levels, and requires a school district or county superintendent of schools to give notice to the employee before the 15th of May that his or her services will be terminated at the close of the current school year. Existing law authorizes a county superintendent of schools in a county that meets certain population requirements, for the purpose of making reductions initiated during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 school years in the number of county employees because of a reduction in services or elimination of a juvenile camp program, to retain the county employees until the effective date of the closure or reduction in services of that juvenile camp program. This bill would extend that authority to the 2006-07 and 2007-08 school years. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. Section 1 of Chapter 260 of the Statutes of 2004, as amended by Section 1 of Chapter 19 of the Statutes of 2005, is amended to read: Section 1. For purposes of making reductions initiated during the 2006-07 or 2007-08 school years pursuant to Section 44955 of the Education Code in the number of employees because of a reduction in services or elimination of a juvenile camp program, a county superintendent of schools in a county of the first class may retain those employees until the effective date of the closure or reduction in services of that juvenile camp program.
