An act to add Section 51226.11 to the Education Code, and to add
Section 13519.20 to the Penal Code, relating to career technical
education.

AB 2698, as amended, Charles Calderon. Career technical education:
peace officer standards and training.
Existing law requires the Superintendent of Public Instruction to
coordinate the development of model curriculum standards for a career
technical education course of study that provides an opportunity for
pupils in grades 7 to 12, inclusive, to attain entry-level
employment skills in business or industry upon graduation from high
school. Existing law requires the Commission on Peace Officer
Standards and Training to adopt rules establishing minimum standards
for recruitment and training of peace officers.
This bill would require the Superintendent to coordinate the
development of model curriculum standards for a career technical
education course of study relevant to training to become a peace
officer by January 1, 2010, and would require the commission to work
in consultation and coordination with the Superintendent to develop
the model curriculum standards.

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. Section 51226.11 is added to the Education Code,
immediately following Section 51226.1, to read:
51226.11. (a) The Superintendent of Public
Instruction shall coordinate the development of model curriculum
standards for a career technical education course of study relevant
to training to become a peace officer. In developing the
framework standards , the Superintendent shall
work in consultation and coordination with the Commission on Peace
Officer Standards and Training. The
(b) The model curriculum
standards shall be completed by January 1, 2010.
(c) The department shall make the model curriculum standards
developed pursuant to this section available on the career technical
education Internet Web site maintained pursuant to Section 52499.66.
SEC. 2. Section 13519.20 is added to the Penal Code, immediately
following Section 13519.14,, to read:
13519.20. The commission shall work in consultation and
coordination with the Superintendent of Public Instruction to develop
model curriculum standards for a career technical education course
of study relevant to training to become a peace officer pursuant to
Section 51226.11 of the Education Code. The model curriculum
standards shall be completed by January 1, 2010.
