   Relative to common core state education standards.

   AJR 39, as introduced, Beall. Common core state education
standards.
   This measure would call upon the National Governors Association
and the Council of Chief State School Officers to develop common core
state standards in the core academic disciplines of English-language
arts, mathematics, history-social science, and science and request
that they replicate the process used to develop English-language arts
and mathematics common core state standards to now develop common
core state standards for social studies and science.

   WHEREAS, Public schools were purposely created to prepare young
people to become educated, responsible, participating citizens; and
   WHEREAS, The common core state standards initiative is a
significant and historic opportunity for states to collectively
accelerate and drive education reform toward the ultimate goal of all
pupils graduating from high school ready for college, work, and
success in the global economy; and
   WHEREAS, All pupils across our great nation deserve to have access
to high quality social studies and science education that will
provide them with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to become
responsible and informed citizens with a strong curiosity of the
physical world around them; and
   WHEREAS, Each new generation of pupils must be equipped with the
knowledge of history, geography, economics, and government, skills
needed to make informed decisions about complex public issues,
attitudes that support democratic practices, commitment to engage in
civic life, a strong understanding of the physical world, including
biology, chemistry, geology, astronomy and physics, and a firm grasp
of the scientific method of discovery; now, therefore, be it
   Resolved by the Assembly and the Senate of the State of
California, jointly, That the California State Legislature, to ensure
the future of America and our democratic institutions, calls upon
the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State
School Officers to develop common core state standards in the core
academic disciplines of English-language arts, mathematics,
history-social science, and science; and be it further
   Resolved, That the National Governors Association and Council of
Chief State School Officers replicate the process used to develop
English-language arts and mathematics common core state standards to
now develop common core state standards for social studies and
science.
   Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of
this resolution to the President and Vice president of the United
States, to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, to the
majority Leader of the Senate, and to each Senator and Representative
from California in the Congress of the United States.
