SUMMARY : Extends the time in which a member of the Armed Forces may receive veterans' preference points on entrance examinations for state employment from six to 12 months after the establishment of the employment list. The Senate amendments correct a grammatical error. AS PASSED BY THE ASSEMBLY, this bill was substantially similar to the version approved by the Senate. FISCAL EFFECT : According to the Senate Appropriations Committee, pursuant to Senate Rule 28.8, negligible state costs. COMMENTS : Under existing law, veterans' preference points are provided in open and open nonpromotional civil service entrance examinations for classifications that do not require both college graduation and two or more years of experience. In order to be eligible for veterans preference points, the person's discharge from the military must have been classified as other than dishonorable. Veterans and widows or widowers of veterans, as well as spouses of 100% disabled veterans, are entitled to a 10-point preference, and disabled veterans are entitled to a 15-point preference, on open examinations. If a member of the Armed Forces successfully passes a state civil service examination and becomes qualified for the veterans' preference within six months after the establishment of the employment list, he or she is entitled to receive the additional points at that time.
