BILL ANALYSIS SCR 19 Page 1 Date of Hearing: April 30, 2009 ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON RULES Ted W. Lieu, Chair SCR 19 (Steinberg) - As Amended: March 16, 2009 SENATE VOTE : 37-0 SUBJECT : Jewish American Heritage Month. SUMMARY : Designates May 2009 as Jewish American Heritage Month. Specifically, this resolution makes the following legislative findings: 1)The earliest Jewish immigrants came to California as early as the seventeenth century fleeing persecution from the Spanish Inquisition; and later, Jewish immigrants from Germany and Austria-Hungary were among the original "forty-niners," who enjoyed unprecedented freedom and social mobility to pursue their dreams of independence, prosperity and serving in political office. 2)Since then, successive waves of Jewish immigrants have come to California to find a better life and have made significant contributions to California's culture and society; and in the decades after the Second World War, the remaining barriers to Jewish educational, economic, and social advancement fell rapidly as California society led the way in tolerance of diversity and a commitment to an open society.
