           SUBJECT  :    Deputy Frank Trejo Memorial Interchange

           DIGEST  :    This resolution names the State Route (SR) 101 
          interchange at SR 12 in Sonoma County as the "Deputy Frank 
          Trejo Memorial Interchange."

           ANALYSIS  :    The author introduced this resolution as a 
          tribute to the life and work of Deputy Frank Trejo, who 
          died in the line of duty.

           Background on Frank Trejo  .  Frank Trejo was a career lawman 
          whose work spanned 35 years.  He first served as a police 
          officer for the cities of Lompoc and Tiburon before joining 
          the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, where he served for 15 
          years.  Deputy Trejo was affectionately known as the "old 
          man" in the sheriff's office and is credited with mentoring

          many younger officers over the course of his 35-year 
          career.  On March 29, 1995, Deputy Trejo was shot and 
          killed in the line of duty while investigating a suspicious 
          motor vehicle in his beat west of the city of Santa Rosa.  
          Deputy Trejo is remembered as a loving husband to his wife 
          Barbara, as father to four children, and as grandfather and 
          great-grandfather.  He has been awarded the Gold Medal of 
          Valor for his sacrifice, Sonoma County Sheriff's Office 
          highest award.

          This resolution designates the SR 101 interchange at SR 12 
          in the City of Santa Rosa as the "Deputy Frank Trejo 
          Memorial Interchange."  This resolution further requests 
          that the Department of Transportation erect appropriate 
          signs upon receiving donations from non-state sources to 
          cover the costs.
