SUBJECT : Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

SUMMARY : Designates the month of September 2012 as Prostate
Cancer Awareness Month in the State of California.
Specifically, this resolution makes the following legislative
          findings:

1)The American Cancer Society estimates that one in six men will
develop prostate cancer in his lifetime; and, approximately
241,740 new cases of the disease are predicted in the United
States in 2012 which could result in nearly 28,170 deaths.

2)In California, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among
most races with an expected 20,200 men predicted to be
diagnosed with the disease in 2012 and approximately 3,090
            deaths.

3)While prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in
men, little is known about the disease; and, there are no
symptoms in the early stages. Survival rates reach 100
percent when prostate cancer is diagnosed and treated early
but drops to 29 percent when the disease has spread to other
            areas of the body.

4)The American Cancer Society recommends that health care
providers offer a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test
and digital rectal examination (DRE) annually to men who have
a life expectancy of ten years beginning at age 50; unless you
are African American, who are at higher risk for prostate
cancer and should begin testing at age 45.
