DIGEST : This resolution designates the week of May 13
through May 19, 2012, as Food Allergy Awareness Week.

ANALYSIS : This resolution makes the following
          legislative findings:

1.As many as 15 million Americans have food allergies,
nearly six million of whom are children under 18 years of
            age.

2.Research shows that the prevalence of food allergies is
            increasing among children.

3.The eight foods that cause 90 percent of all food allergy
reactions in the United States are shellfish, fish, milk,
egg, tree nuts, peanuts, soy, and wheat. Symptoms of a
food-allergic reaction can include hives, vomiting,
diarrhea, respiratory distress, and swelling of the
            throat.

4.According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, food allergy reactions result in more than
                                                           CONTINUED

300,000 ambulatory care visits each year involving
children under 18 years of age. A food allergy reaction
typically occurs when an individual unknowingly eats a
food containing an ingredient to which he or she is
            allergic.

5.There is no cure for a food allergy, and scientists do
not understand why food allergies occur. Strict
avoidance of the offending food is the only way to
            prevent an allergic reaction.

6.Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that is rapid
in onset and may cause death.

7.The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network is a national,
nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness
            about food allergy and anaphylaxis.
