SUBJECT : Brain Injury Awareness Month

DIGEST : This resolution proclaims March 2012 as Brain
Injury Awareness Month, and applauds the Brain Injury
Association of California for its contributions toward
educating Californians on matters pertaining to traumatic
brain injury.
ANALYSIS : This resolution makes the following
legislative findings:
1. An estimated 1.7 million Americans sustain a traumatic
brain injury, which is a contributing factor in roughly
one-third of all injury-related deaths in the United
States.
2. In California, each year nearly 200,000 people are
treated and released from emergency departments and over
30,000 more are hospitalized with a primary or secondary
diagnosis of nonfatal traumatic brain injury.
3. Traumatic brain injury is the signature injury of the
wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, presenting new challenges
for members of the military and their families.

This resolution designates March 2012 as Brain Injury
Awareness Month, and applauds the Brain Injury Association
of California for its invaluable contributions toward
educating the citizens of our great state on matters
pertaining to traumatic brain injury prevention, treatment,
resources, supports, and assistance.

ARGUMENTS IN SUPPORT : According to the Association of
Regional Center Agencies, "This resolution recognizes the
profound effects TBI Ýtraumatic brain injury] can have on
individuals of all ages. It commends the Brain Injury
Association of California for its contributions towards
educating Californians on TBI prevention, treatment,
resources, supports, and assistance. The increased
awareness of TBI that this resolution will create, and its
recognition of the work of the Brain Injury Association of
California, will help to reduce the likelihood of these
injuries occurring, and will increase awareness of the
services and supports available to those who do suffer a
TBI."
