This measure would recognize March 1, 2013, as Read Across America Day.

P1    1WHEREAS, Reading is the building block to learning, and is 
2the foundation for future success; and 
3WHEREAS, In 1998, the National Education Association started 
4its “Read Across America” campaign to encourage children to 
5read every day and to raise awareness about the importance of 
6reading; and
7WHEREAS, The California Teachers Association celebrates 
8“Read Across America” and the positive impact it has made in the 
9schools and the State of California; and
10WHEREAS, “Read Across America” is a national celebration 
11of reading that promotes literacy and adult involvement in the 
12education of pupils, and will be celebrated on March 1 in honor 
13of Dr. Seuss’s birthday; and
14WHEREAS, The theme of this year’s event, “Reading Takes 
15You Places,” reminds children of all ages that learning to read is 
16fun and one of the most important things they will learn to do; and
P2    1WHEREAS, Pupils, parents, teachers, sports figures, celebrities, 
2firefighters, and business and community leaders are taking part 
3in “Read Across America” events to celebrate the joy of reading; 
4and
5WHEREAS, On March 1, 2013, the National Education 
6Association, the California Teachers Association, local schools, 
7libraries, bookstores, businesses, and other community 
8organizations will commemorate “Read Across America Day”; 
9now, therefore, be it
10Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate 
11thereof concurring, That the Legislature joins the California 
12Teachers Association in recognizing March 1, 2013, as “Read 
13Across America Day”; and be it further
14Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies 
15of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
