Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 10—Relative to Read Across America Day.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 10, as amended, Buchanan. Read Across America Day.

This measure would recognize March 1, 2013, as Read Across America Day.

1WHEREAS, Reading is the building block to learning, and is
2the foundation for future success; and

P2    1WHEREAS, In 1998, the National Education Association started
2its “Read Across America” campaign to encourage children to
3read every day and to raise awareness about the importance of
4reading; and

5WHEREAS, The California Teachers Association celebrates
6“Read Across America” and the positive impact it has made in the
7schools and the State of California; and

8WHEREAS, “Read Across America” is a national celebration
9of reading that promotes literacy and adult involvement in the
10education of pupils, and will be celebrated on March 1 in honor
11of Dr. Seuss’s birthday; and

12WHEREAS, The theme of this year’s event, “Reading Takes
13You Places,” reminds children of all ages that learning to read is
14fun and one of the most important things they will learn to do; and

15WHEREAS, Pupils, parents, teachers, sports figures, celebrities,
16firefighters, and business and community leaders are taking part
17in “Read Across America” events to celebrate the joy of reading;
18and

19WHEREAS, On March 1, 2013, the National Education
20Association, the California Teachers Association, local schools,
21libraries, bookstores, businesses, and other community
22organizations will commemorate “Read Across America Day”;
23now, therefore, be it

24Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
25thereof concurring,
That the Legislature joins the California
26Teachers Association in recognizing March 1, 2013, as “Read
27Across America Day”; and be it further

28Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
29of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
