Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 14—Relative to the Deputy Tony Diaz, Yolo County Sheriff’s Office, Memorial Rest Area.

This measure would designate the rest area in the Town ofbegin delete Dunnigan, Californiaend deletebegin insert Dunniganend insert on Interstate 5 as the Deputy Tony Diaz, Yolo County Sheriff’s Office, Memorial Rest Area. The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost for appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

P1    1WHEREAS, Jose Antonio “Tony” Diaz was born in Jacona,
2Mexico, on September 20, 1970, to Rafael and Carolina Diaz, and
3grew up with his nine sisters and brothers in Dixon, California;
4and

5WHEREAS, During the summers of 1986 to 1989, he worked
6tirelessly in the fields of farmers in Solano County; and

7WHEREAS, After completing high school, Tony assisted
8farmworkers as Assistant Program Services Manager with the
9Human Development Corporation, and after transferring to the
P2    1corporate office, he developed a passion for computer technology;
2and

3WHEREAS, In 1999, the Yolo County Information Technology
4(IT) Department hired Tony and assigned him to the Yolo County
5Sheriff’s Office; and

6WHEREAS, While assigned to IT he became interested in law
7enforcement and attended the Yuba College Police Academy in
82004; and

9WHEREAS, The Yolo County Sheriff’s Office hired Tony on
10August 22, 2004, and his peers described him as a gentle,
11hardworking man who was proud of his family and community;
12and

13WHEREAS, Tony loved soccer so much he coached the
14Woodland Flames and the Woodland Blaze teams for nine years
15with the Woodland Soccer Club; and

16WHEREAS, On June 15, 2008, Deputy Diaz attempted to stop
17a known parolee suspected of driving under the influence with a
18child in the vehicle; and

19WHEREAS, After he failed to yield, Deputy Diaz pursued the
20driver into the town of Dunnigan, where he stopped on County
21Road 5 near County Road 99W. The suspect fled on footbegin delete and whileend deletebegin insert.

Deputy Diaz checked on the child in the vehicle,begin insert heend insert was
23shot from behind; and

24WHEREAS, Officer Diaz succumbed to his injuries a few hours
25later at Woodland Memorial Hospital; and

26WHEREAS, Deputy Diaz’ name was engraved into the National
27Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., and
28the California Peace Officers Memorial at the State Capitol; and

29WHEREAS, Deputy Diaz is survived by his wife Silvia and
30three beautiful children: Angelica, Jessica, and Alejandra Diaz;
31now, therefore, be it

32Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
33thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby designates the rest
34area in Dunnigan on Interstate 5 as the Deputy Tony Diaz, Yolo
35County Sheriff’s Office, Memorial Rest Area; and be it further

36Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
37to determine the cost of erecting the appropriate signs, consistent
38with the signage requirements for the state highway system,
39showing this special designation, and upon receiving donations
P3    1from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs; and
2be it further

3Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
4of this resolution to the Department of Transportation and to the
5author for appropriate distribution.
