                 ACR 14 (Yamada) - As Introduced:  February 11, 2013
           
          SUBJECT  :  Deputy Tony Diaz, Yolo County Sheriff's Office,  
          Memorial Rest Area.

           SUMMARY  :  Designates a rest area in Dunnigan on Interstate 5 as  
          the Deputy Tony Diaz, Yolo County Sheriff's Office, Memorial  
          Rest Area.  Specifically,  this bill  :  

          1)Recounts the life and career of Tony Diaz, an officer with the  
            Yolo County Sheriff's Office, who tragically lost his life in  
            the line of duty.  


          2)Designates the rest area in Dunnigan on Interstate 5 as the  
            Deputy Tony Diaz, Yolo County Sheriff's Office, Memorial Rest  
            Area.  



          3)Requests the Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to  
            determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the  
            signing requirements for the state highway system, showing the  
            special designation and, upon receiving donations from  
            non-state sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.  



          EXISTING LAW  :  Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating  
          and maintaining state highways.  This includes the installation  
          and maintenance of highway signs.  

           FISCAL EFFECT  :  Costs to make and erect the appropriate signs  
          are covered by donations.  

           COMMENTS  :  On June 15, 2008, Deputy Tony Diaz was tragically  
          shot while attempting to stop a known parolee suspected of  
          driving under the influence with a child in the vehicle.  Deputy  
          Diaz died of his injuries just a few hours later.  Deputy Diaz  
          was 37 years and had served with the Yolo County Sheriff's  
          Office for four years.  He was known by his peers to be a

          gentle, hardworking man who was proud of his family and his  
          community.
