Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 22—Relative to Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 22, as amended, Dickinson. Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week.

This measure would declare the week of March 11, 2013, through March 15, 2013, as Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week.

1WHEREAS, The week of March 11, 2013, through March 15,
22013, has been declared Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week in
P2    1recognition of the importance of finding the cause and cure for
2multiple sclerosis and to express appreciation to the National
3Multiple Sclerosis Society and its California chapters; and

4WHEREAS, Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disease of the
5central nervous system that affects an estimated 400,000 Americans
6across the country, and nearly 200 new cases are diagnosed each
7week nationwide; and

8WHEREAS, The California chapters of the National Multiple
9Sclerosis Society report that more than 40,000 people in California
10are affected by this devastating disease. Throughout the years, the
11California chapters have been committed to heightening public
12knowledge and insight and are currently planning several major
13statewide fundraisers and educational programs to raise awareness
14about the effects of multiple sclerosis; and

15WHEREAS, Twice as many women as men have multiple
16sclerosis and most are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50,
17and while studies indicate genetic factors make certain individuals
18more susceptible than others, there is no evidence that multiple
19sclerosis is directly inherited; and

20WHEREAS, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, founded
21in 1946, funds more research, offers more services for people with
22multiple sclerosis, and provides more professional education
23programs than any other multiple sclerosis organization in the
24world. Through its home office in New York and its 50-state
25network of chapters, the society services more than one million
26people annually; and

27WHEREAS, The society is the largest private supporter of
28multiple sclerosis research in the world, and for more than 55 years
29it has funded innovative research and advocated for government
30support of important scientific inquiries; now, therefore, be it

31Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
32thereof concurring,
That March 11, 2013, through March 15, 2013,
33is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week and that the residents of
34the State of California should be encouraged to join together in
35raising awareness and heightening public knowledge of this
36debilitating disease; and be it further

37Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
38of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
