Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 37—Relative to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bridge.

ACR 37, as introduced, Harkey. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bridge.

This measure would designate the Mission Avenue bridge at Interstate 5 in the City of Oceanside as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bridge. The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost for appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

P1    1WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. achieved international
2recognition as a leader of the American civil rights movement,
3which sought, through nonviolent measures and civil disobedience,
4to bring about social, political, and economic equality for different
5racial, cultural, and ethnic members of society; and

6WHEREAS, This philosophy and these ideals of Dr. King
7advanced equal rights in education and labor, as well civil rights;
8and

9WHEREAS, As an ordained Baptist minister, Dr. King’s
10profound leadership inspired supporters throughout the nation to
P2    1engage in marches, peaceful demonstrations, and boycotts to protest
2racial discrimination; and

3WHEREAS, Those efforts contributed to the enactment of the
4Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Right Act of 1965; and

5WHEREAS, Dr. King’s philosophy and values provide our
6youth with ideals to bridge into adulthood; and

7WHEREAS, It is fitting that the legacy of Dr. King be
8proclaimed by the naming of the Mission Avenue bridge in his
9honor now; and

10WHEREAS, The bridge will be visible to Oceanside visitors
11and residents to serve as a reminder of this American icon; now,
12therefore, be it

13Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
14thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby designates the
15Mission Avenue bridge at Interstate 5 in the City of Oceanside,
16California as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bridge;
17and be it further

18Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
19to determine the cost of erecting appropriate signs, consistent with
20the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing
21this special designation and, upon receiving donations from
22nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs; and be it
23further

24Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
25of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
26for appropriate distribution.
