DIGEST : This resolution names the Mission Avenue Bridge over
Interstate 5 in the City of Oceanside in San Diego County as the
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bridge.
ANALYSIS : The author introduced this resolution to honor the
life and service of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was born on January 15, 1929,
was a clergyman, doctor of theology, activist, and leader in the
African American Civil Rights Movement. He led the 1955
Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference in 1957. Dr. King helped organize the
1963 March on Washington, D.C., where he delivered his famous "I

Have a Dream" speech. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964
for working to reduce racial inequality through nonviolence. On
April 4, 1968, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.
Congress established Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a national
holiday in 1986.
This resolution designates the Mission Avenue Bridge over
Interstate 5 in the City of Oceanside as the Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. Memorial Bridge honoring the life and achievements of
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The resolution further requests
that the Department of Transportation erect appropriate signs
upon receiving donations from non-state sources to cover the
costs.
