House Resolution No. 16—Relative to Lupus Awareness Month.

P1    1WHEREAS, Systematic lupus erythematosus, commonly known
2as lupus, is a chronic, complex, and often life-threatening
3autoimmune disease; and

4WHEREAS, Researchers estimate that five million people have
5been diagnosed with lupus or related diseases throughout the world,
6and approximately 100,000 more are diagnosed every year; and

7WHEREAS, More people have lupus than AIDS, cerebral palsy,
8sickle cell anemia, multiple sclerosis, and cystic fibrosis combined;
9and

10WHEREAS, Lupus strikes women primarily when they are 15
11to 44 years of age, and it affects all aspects of their lives; and

12WHEREAS, Lupus disproportionately affects people of color;
13and

14WHEREAS, Lupus impacts more than just the life of the patient;
15it affects the patient’s family, friends, coworkers, employers, and
16community; and

17WHEREAS, The Lupus Foundation of Northern California in
18San Jose, the Lupus Foundation of Southern California in San
19Diego, and Lupus LA in Los Angeles were founded as 501(c)(3)
20nonprofit organizations to alleviate suffering for lupus patients
21through patient and family services, achieve early detection of
22undiagnosed cases through awareness promotion, and achieve the
23eradication of lupus by supporting lupus research; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and proper treatments are critical
2to the improvement of the quality of life and survival rate of lupus
3sufferers; and

4WHEREAS, Increased public awareness, education, and research
5are key to winning the battle against lupus; now, therefore, be it

6Resolved, by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
7Assembly proclaims May 2013 as Lupus Awareness Month and
8extends heartfelt wishes to the Lupus Foundation of Northern
9California in San Jose, the Lupus Foundation of Southern
10California in San Diego, and Lupus LA in Los Angeles for success
11in their core objectives in the future; and be it further

12Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
13of this resolution to the Lupus Foundation of Northern California
14in San Jose, the Lupus Foundation of Southern California in San
15Diego, Lupus LA in Los Angeles, and to the author for appropriate
16distribution.
