P1 1WHEREAS, International Surfing Day, observed annually on
2June 20, was founded by the Surfrider Foundation to unify surfers
3from around the world to celebrate the sport of surfing and protect
4our beach and ocean environment; and
5WHEREAS, The Surfrider Foundation is a nonprofit grassroots
6organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our
7world’s oceans, waves, and beaches through a powerful activist
8network comprised of over 250,000 supporters, activists, and
9members worldwide; and
10WHEREAS, California’s coastline spans 1,100 miles, and its
11beaches and coastal areas generate $1.15 trillion in economic
12activity annually; and
13WHEREAS, California has the largest ocean economy in the
14United States, ranking number one for both employment (408,000
15jobs) and gross state product ($42.9 billion); and
16WHEREAS, The United States boasts approximately 3.3 million
17surfers, who spend between $1.9 and $3.3 billion a year on local
18surf trips, and in 2010, the surf industry, almost exclusively based
19in California, generated $6.24 billion in United States retail sales;
20and
P2 1WHEREAS, California is home to iconic surf breaks, such as
2Malibu, Trestles, Mavericks, and Rincon, which are destinations
3for both domestic and international surfers; and
4WHEREAS, Every year, California surf breaks host numerous
5domestic and international surf contests, including the Association
6of Surfing Professionals World Tour events; and
7WHEREAS, Now in its ninth year, International Surfing Day
8has grown to over 200 separate events in over 25 different countries
9and continues to unite surfers around the world to celebrate the
10sport of surfing, while raising awareness and showing appreciation
11for our coastal environments; now, therefore, be it
12Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
13Assembly joins with the Surfrider Foundation in recognizing June
1420, 2013, as International Surfing Day in California, and commends
15all those who work diligently to protect our state’s beaches and
16ocean environments; and be it further
17Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
18of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
