P1 1WHEREAS, International Surfing Day, observed annually on
2June 20, was founded by the Surfrider Foundation to unify surfers
3from around the world to celebrate the sport of surfing and protect
4our beach and ocean environment; and
5WHEREAS, The Surfrider Foundation is a nonprofit grassroots
6organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our
7world’s oceans, waves, and beaches through a powerful activist
8network comprised of over 250,000 supporters, activists, and
9members worldwide; and
P2 1WHEREAS, California’s coastline spans 1,100 miles, and its
2beaches and coastal areas generate $1.15 trillion in economic
3activity annually; and
4WHEREAS, California has the largest ocean economy in the
5United States, ranking number one for both employment (408,000
6 jobs) and gross state product ($42.9 billion); and
7WHEREAS, The United States boasts approximately 3.3 million
8surfers, who spend between $1.9 and $3.3 billion a year on local
9surf trips, and in 2010, the surf industry, almost exclusively based
10in California, generated $6.24 billion in United States retail sales;
11and
12WHEREAS, California is home to iconic surf breaks, such as
13Malibu, Trestles, Mavericks, and Rincon, which are destinations
14for both domestic and international surfers; and
15WHEREAS, Every year, California surf breaks host numerous
16domestic and international surf contests, including the Association
17of Surfing Professionals World Tour events; and
18WHEREAS, Now in its ninth year, International Surfing Day
19has grown to over 200 separate events in over 25 different countries
20and continues to unite surfers around the world to celebrate the
21sport of surfing, while raising awareness and showing appreciation
22for our coastal environments; now, therefore, be it
23Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
24Assembly joins with the Surfrider Foundation in recognizing June
2520, 2013, as International Surfing Day in California, and commends
26all those who work diligently to protect our state’s beaches and
27ocean environments; and be it further
28Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
29of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
