P1 1WHEREAS, Our great state and nation strive to promote the
2egalitarian principles of equality and justice where all people have
3inalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of
4happiness; and
5WHEREAS, California’s and America’s diversity is one of our
6greatest strengths; and
7WHEREAS, To achieve a just and fair society, we must teach
8our children to respect one another, to appreciate our differences,
9and to recognize the common good in all of us; and
10WHEREAS, Our great state protects its residents from
11discrimination and harassment based on actual or perceived race,
12color, religion, ancestry, ethnicity, national origin, physical or
13mental ability, medical condition, sex, including gender identity
14or expression, or sexual orientation; and
15WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
16have made important and lasting contributions to our great state
17and nation in every field of endeavor, including, but not limited
18to, business, medicine, law, humanities, science, literature, politics,
19education, music, philanthropy, sports, arts, and culture, that enrich
20our national life; and
P2 1WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
2come from all walks of life, regardless of race, color, religion,
3ancestry, ethnicity, national origin, economic status, physical or
4mental ability, medical condition, sex, or gender identity or
5expression; and
6WHEREAS, For the first time in the history of the United States,
7a sitting President and Vice President, President Barack Obama
8and Vice President Joe Biden, affirmed their support for the
9fundamental right to marry, regardless of sexual orientation or
10gender. Former Vice President Dick Cheney and former First Lady
11Laura Bush have also affirmed their support for marriage equality;
12and
13WHEREAS, More lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
14are being elected to public offices across the country; and
15WHEREAS, While our great state and nation have progressed
16in our journey toward dignity, understanding, and mutual respect
17for all, we still have a long way to go in eradicating the prejudice
18and discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
19people and their families encounter, and to this end, we call for
20the passage of the inclusive federal Employment
21Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and comprehensive immigration
22reform; and
23WHEREAS, To build a stronger and better state and nation, we
24must continue to help advance the cause of equality for all people;
25and
26WHEREAS, Our friends and allies have shown considerable
27support and commitment to the struggles of lesbian, gay, bisexual,
28and transgender people; and
29WHEREAS, Each year, June marks the anniversary of the
30Stonewall Rebellion that gave birth to the modern lesbian, gay,
31bisexual, and transgender civil rights movement; and
32WHEREAS, President Barack Obama has proclaimed June as
33Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month and
34reaffirmed his administration’s goal of eliminating prejudice
35everywhere it exists and to celebrate the great diversity of the
36American people; and
37WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans,
38their families and friends, and all those committed to justice and
39equality celebrate, during the month of June, the rich culture, the
40notable achievements, and the outstanding services that lesbian,
P3 1gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans make to our great state
2and nation; now, therefore, be it
3Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
4Assembly proclaims June 2013 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and
5Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month, urges all residents to join in
6celebrating the culture, accomplishments, and contributions of
7lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, and encourages the
8people of California to work to help advance the cause of equality
9for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their
10families; and be it further
11Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
12of this resolution to the Members of the Legislature and to the
13author for appropriate distribution.
