P1 1WHEREAS, Our great state and nation strive to promote the
2egalitarian principles of equality and justice where all people have
3inalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of
4happiness; and
5WHEREAS, California’s and America’s diversity is one of our
6greatest strengths; and
7WHEREAS, To achieve a just and fair society, we must teach
8our children to respect one another, to appreciate our differences,
9and to recognize the common good in all of us; and
10WHEREAS, Our great state protects its residents from
11discrimination and harassment based on actual or perceived race,
12color, religion, ancestry, ethnicity, national origin, physical or
P2 1mental ability, medical condition, sex, including gender identity
2or expression, or sexual orientation; and
3WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
4have made important and lasting contributions to our great state
5and nation in every field of endeavor, including, but not limited
6to, business, medicine, law, humanities, science, literature, politics,
7education, music, philanthropy, sports, arts, and culture, that enrich
8our national life; and
9WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
10come from all walks of life, regardless of race, color, religion,
11ancestry, ethnicity, national origin, economic status, physical or
12mental ability, medical condition, sex, or gender identity or
13expression; and
14WHEREAS, For the first time in the history of the United States,
15a sitting President and Vice President, President Barack Obama
16and Vice President Joe Biden, affirmed their support for the
17fundamental right to marry, regardless of sexual orientation or
18gender. Former Vice President Dick Cheney and former First Lady
19Laura Bush have also affirmed their support for marriage equality;
20and
21WHEREAS, More lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
22are being elected to public offices across the country; and
23WHEREAS, While our great state and nation have progressed
24in our journey toward dignity, understanding, and mutual respect
25for all, we still have a long way to go in eradicating the prejudice
26and discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
27people and their families encounter, and to this end, we call for
28the passage of the inclusive federal Employment
29Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and comprehensive immigration
30reform; and
31WHEREAS, To build a stronger and better state and nation, we
32must continue to help advance the cause of equality for all people;
33and
34WHEREAS, Our friends and allies have shown considerable
35support and commitment to the struggles of lesbian, gay, bisexual,
36and transgender people; and
37WHEREAS, Each year, June marks the anniversary of the
38Stonewall Rebellion that gave birth to the modern lesbian, gay,
39bisexual, and transgender civil rights movement; and
P3 1WHEREAS, President Barack Obama has proclaimed June as
2Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month and
3reaffirmed his administration’s goal of eliminating prejudice
4everywhere it exists and to celebrate the great diversity of the
5American people; and
6WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans,
7their families and friends, and all those committed to justice and
8equality celebrate, during the month of June, the rich culture, the
9notable achievements, and the outstanding services that lesbian,
10gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans make to our great state
11and nation; now, therefore, be it
12Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
13Assembly proclaims June 2013 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and
14Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month, urges all residents to join in
15celebrating the culture, accomplishments, and contributions of
16lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, and encourages the
17people of California to work to help advance the cause of equality
18for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their
19families; and be it further
20Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
21of this resolution to the Members of the Legislature and to the
22author for appropriate distribution.
