House Resolution No. 43—Relative to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month.

P1    1WHEREAS, Our great state and nation consistently and
2diligently strives to promote the egalitarian principles of equality
3and justice where all people have inalienable rights, including life,
4liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and

5WHEREAS, California’s and America’s diversity is one of our
6greatest strengths; and

7WHEREAS, To achieve a just and fair society, we must teach
8our children to respect one another, to appreciate our differences,
9and to recognize the common good in all of us; and

10WHEREAS, Our great state protects its residents from
11discrimination and harassment based on actual or perceived race,
12ethnicity, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, physical or
13mental ability, medical condition, sex, including gender identity
14or expression, or sexual orientation; and

15WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
16have made important and lasting contributions to our great state
17and nation in every field of endeavor, including, but not limited
18to, business, medicine, law, humanities, science, literature, politics,
P2    1education, music, philanthropy, sports and athletics, arts, and
2culture, that enrich our national life; and

3WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
4come from all walks of life, regardless of race, ethnicity, color,
5religion, ancestry, national origin, economic status, physical or
6mental ability, medical condition, sex, or gender identity or
7expression; and

8WHEREAS, For the first time in the history of the United States,
9a sitting President and Vice President, President Barack Obama
10and Vice President Joe Biden, affirmed their support for the
11fundamental right to marry, regardless of sexual orientation or
12gender. Former Vice President Dick Cheney and former First Lady
13Laura Bush have also affirmed their support for marriage equality;
14and

15WHEREAS, The Supreme Court of the United States struck
16down the Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8, which barred
17the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages and
18restored marriage equality to California, respectively; and

19WHEREAS, The Supreme Court of the United States struck down
20the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), affirming that all
21loving and committed couples who are married deserve equal
22treatment and respect from the federal government; and

23WHEREAS, The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that
24Proposition 8 sponsors had no standing to appeal the federal trial
25court’s decision that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional, thereby
26restoring marriage equality in California; and

27WHEREAS, Married same-sex couples now enjoy the same
28rights and privileges granted to other married couples, including
29joint tax filings, military benefits, family and medical leave, and
30the ability to sponsor their foreign spouse; and

31WHEREAS, The Department of Defense repealed “Don’t Ask,
32Don’t Tell,” allowing servicemen and women to serve their country
33openly and proudly; and

34WHEREAS, More lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
35are being elected to public offices across the country, playing in
36professional sports leagues, occupying the highest positions in
37business, and serving as role models for all; and

38WHEREAS, While our great state and nation have progressed
39in our journey toward dignity, understanding, and mutual respect
40for all, we still have a long way to go in eradicating the prejudice
P3    1and discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
2people and their families encounter, and to this end, we continue
3working for the passage of the inclusive federal Employment
4Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), comprehensive immigration
5reform, and increased awareness of the difficulties facing the
6transgender community; and

7WHEREAS, To build a stronger and better state and nation, we
8must continue to help advance the cause of equality for all people;
9and

10WHEREAS, Friends and allies of the LGBT community have
11shown considerable support and commitment to the struggles of
12lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people at home and abroad;
13and

14WHEREAS, Each year, June marks the anniversary of the
15Stonewall Rebellion that gave birth to the modern lesbian, gay,
16bisexual, and transgender civil rights movement; and

17WHEREAS, President Barack Obama has proclaimed June as
18Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month and
19reaffirmed his administration’s goal of eliminating prejudice
20everywhere it exists and celebrating the great diversity of the
21American people; and

22WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans,
23their families and friends, and all those committed to justice and
24equality celebrate, during the month of June, the rich culture, the
25notable achievements, and the outstanding services that lesbian,
26gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans make to our great state
27and nation; now, therefore, be it

28Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
29Assembly proclaims June 2014 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and
30Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month, urges all residents to join in
31celebrating the culture, accomplishments, and contributions of
32lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, and encourages the
33people of California to work to help advance the cause of equality
34for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their
35families; and be it further

36Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
37of this resolution to the Members of the Legislature and to the
38author for appropriate distribution.
