P1 1WHEREAS, Our great state and nation consistently and
2diligently strives to promote the egalitarian principles of equality
3and justice where all people have inalienable rights, including life,
4liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and
5WHEREAS, California’s and America’s diversity is one of our
6greatest strengths; and
7WHEREAS, To achieve a just and fair society, we must teach
8our children to respect one another, to appreciate our differences,
9and to recognize the common good in all of us; and
P2 1WHEREAS, Our great state protects its residents from
2discrimination and harassment based on actual or perceived race,
3ethnicity, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, physical or
4mental ability, medical condition, sex, including gender identity
5or expression, or sexual orientation; and
6WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
7have made important and lasting contributions to our great state
8and nation in every field of endeavor, including, but not limited
9to, business, medicine, law, humanities, science, literature, politics,
10education, music, philanthropy, sports and athletics, arts, and
11culture, that enrich our national life; and
12WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
13come from all walks of life, regardless of race, ethnicity, color,
14religion, ancestry, national origin, economic status, physical or
15mental ability, medical condition, sex, or gender identity or
16expression; and
17WHEREAS, For the first time in the history of the United States,
18a sitting President and Vice President, President Barack Obama
19and Vice President Joe Biden, affirmed their support for the
20fundamental right to marry, regardless of sexual orientation or
21gender. Former Vice President Dick Cheney and former First Lady
22Laura Bush have also affirmed their support for marriage equality;
23and
24WHEREAS, The Supreme Court of the United States struck
25down the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), affirming
26that all loving and committed couples who are married deserve
27equal treatment and respect from the federal government; and
28WHEREAS, The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that
29Proposition 8 sponsors had no standing to appeal the federal trial
30court’s decision that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional, thereby
31restoring marriage equality in California; and
32WHEREAS, Married same-sex couples now enjoy the same
33rights and privileges granted to other married couples, including
34joint tax filings, military benefits, family and medical leave, and
35the ability to sponsor their foreign spouse; and
36WHEREAS, The Department of Defense repealed “Don’t Ask,
37Don’t Tell,” allowing servicemen and women to serve their country
38openly and proudly; and
39WHEREAS, More lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
40are being elected to public offices across the country, playing in
P3 1professional sports leagues, occupying the highest positions in
2business, and serving as role models for all; and
3WHEREAS, While our great state and nation have progressed
4in our journey toward dignity, understanding, and mutual respect
5for all, we still have a long way to go in eradicating the prejudice
6and discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
7people and their families encounter, and to this end, we continue
8working for the passage of the inclusive federal Employment
9Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), comprehensive immigration
10reform, and increased awareness of the difficulties facing the
11transgender community; and
12WHEREAS, To build a stronger and better state and nation, we
13must continue to help advance the cause of equality for all people;
14and
15WHEREAS, Friends and allies of the LGBT community have
16shown considerable support and commitment to the struggles of
17lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people at home and abroad;
18and
19WHEREAS, Each year, June marks the anniversary of the
20Stonewall Rebellion that gave birth to the modern lesbian, gay,
21bisexual, and transgender civil rights movement; and
22WHEREAS, President Barack Obama has proclaimed June as
23Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month and
24reaffirmed his administration’s goal of eliminating prejudice
25everywhere it exists and celebrating the great diversity of the
26American people; and
27WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans,
28their families and friends, and all those committed to justice and
29equality celebrate, during the month of June, the rich culture, the
30notable achievements, and the outstanding services that lesbian,
31gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans make to our great state
32and nation; now, therefore, be it
33Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
34Assembly proclaims June 2014 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and
35Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month, urges all residents to join in
36celebrating the culture, accomplishments, and contributions of
37lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, and encourages the
38people of California to work to help advance the cause of equality
39for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their
40families; and be it further
P4 1Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
2of this resolution to the Members of the Legislature and to the
3author for appropriate distribution.
