House Resolution No. 8—Relative to Problem Gambling Awareness Week.

P1    1WHEREAS, The National Council on Problem Gambling has
2designated the week of March 3, 2013, to March 9, 2013, inclusive,
3as National Problem Gambling Awareness Week; and

4WHEREAS, Problem gambling is a public health issue affecting
5Californians to lose relationships, homes, jobs, and possessions.
6Problem gambling is isolating and has a significant societal and
7economic cost; and

8WHEREAS, The Office of Problem and Pathological Gambling,
9the Gambling Studies Program at the University of California, Los
10Angeles, and trained authorized therapists throughout the state
11have provided services to more than 3,100 clients affected by
12problem gambling behavior; and

13WHEREAS, The Office of Problem and Pathological Gambling
14has now interpreted treatment services available in the Sacramento
15area to help licensed therapists treat limited English speaking
16California residents; and

17WHEREAS, Individuals, professionals, and organizations within
18California have come together to educate the public about the
19negative impacts of problem gambling behavior and to raise
20awareness of treatment services available locally and nationally;
21and

22WHEREAS, The Bureau of Gambling Control within the
23Department of Justice, the California Gambling Control
P2    1Commission, the California State Lottery, the California Friday
2Night Live Partnership, the California Gaming Association, the
3California Tribal Business Alliance, Media Solutions, the NICOS
4Chinese Health Coalition, and the National Asian Pacific American
5Families Against Substance Abuse (NAPAFASA) have joined the
6Office of Problem and Pathological Gambling within the State
7Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs and the California
8Council on Problem Gambling in a collaborative effort to promote
9problem gambling prevention and treatment programs; now,
10therefore, be it

11Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
12week of March 3, 2013, to March 9, 2013, inclusive, be recognized
13as Problem Gambling Awareness Week and the agencies and
14organizations described above be commended for their concerted
15effort to raise public awareness of problem gambling; and be it
16further

17Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
18of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
