House Resolution No. 8—Relative to Problem Gambling Awareness Week.

WHEREAS, The National Council on Problem Gambling has designated the week of March 3, 2013, to March 9, 2013, inclusive, as National Problem Gambling Awareness Week; and

WHEREAS, Problem gambling is a public health issue affecting Californians to lose relationships, homes, jobs, and possessions. Problem gambling is isolating and has a significant societal and economic cost; and

P2    3WHEREAS, The Office of Problem and Pathological Gambling, the Gambling Studies Program at the University of California, Los Angeles, and trained authorized therapists throughout the state have provided services to more than 3,100 clients affected by problem gambling behavior; and

WHEREAS, The Office of Problem and Pathological Gambling has now interpreted treatment services available in the Sacramento area to help licensed therapists treat limited English speaking California residents; and

7WHEREAS, Individuals, professionals, and organizations within
8California have come together to educate the public about the
9negative impacts of problem gambling behavior and to raise
10awareness of treatment services available locally and nationally;
11and

12WHEREAS, The Bureau of Gambling Control within the
13Department of Justice, the California Gambling Control
14Commission, the California State Lottery, the California Friday
15Night Live Partnership, the California Gaming Association, the
16California Tribal Business Alliance, Media Solutions, the NICOS
17Chinese Health Coalition, and the National Asian Pacific American
18Families Against Substance Abuse (NAPAFASA) have joined the
19Office of Problem and Pathological Gambling within the State
20Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs and the California
21Council on Problem Gambling in a collaborative effort to promote
22problem gambling prevention and treatment programs; now,
23therefore, be it

24Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
25week of March 3, 2013, to March 9, 2013, inclusive, be recognized
26as Problem Gambling Awareness Week and the agencies and
27organizations described above be commended for their concerted
28effort to raise public awareness of problem gambling; and be it
29further

30Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
31of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
