P1 1WHEREAS, California’s living and producing historic vineyards
2that were planted in the late 19th century through the mid-20th
3century still make a significant contribution to the state’s economy
4and reputation as a global wine growing region; and
5WHEREAS, Historic vineyards are found throughout California,
6east from the Sierra foothills and San Joaquin County, west to the
7Sonoma coast, north to Mendocino, and south to the Cucamonga
8Valley; and
9WHEREAS, Historic vineyards are beautiful and irreplaceable
10survivors that have lived through the ravages of phylloxera,
11economic downturns, consumer popularity fluctuations, and in
12many cases, prohibition and world wars; and
13WHEREAS, These historic vineyards provide an important
14living repository for wine grape budwood and genetic material;
15and
16WHEREAS, Historic vineyards often provide a living window
17on past vineyard practices including, but not limited to,
18head-trained vines and dry farming; and
19WHEREAS, The interplanted field blends of grape varieties
20that were a common practice of the immigrant farmers who planted
21California vineyards in the past characterize an era of agricultural
22practice and impart wine attributes that are uniquely Californian;
23and
P2 1WHEREAS, Fragile older vines are often less productive than
2younger vines and can require special care to maintain; and
3WHEREAS, Most historic vineyards are family owned and exist
4by virtue of the passion of their caretakers; and
5WHEREAS, The wine made from California’s historic vineyards
6continues to delight wine lovers throughout the world and imparts
7prestige to the state as a place to live, work, and visit; now,
8therefore, be it
9Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
10Assembly recognizes the contribution of California’s living historic
11vineyards to the agricultural and social heritage of the state as well
12as to the enjoyment of wine enthusiasts throughout California and
13the world; and be it further
14Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
15of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
