P1 1WHEREAS, California’s living and producing historic vineyards
2that were planted in the late 19th century through the mid-20th
3century still make a significant contribution to the state’s economy
4and reputation as a global wine growing region; and
5WHEREAS, Historic vineyards are found throughout California,
6east from the Sierra foothills and San Joaquin County, west to the
7Sonoma coast, north to Mendocino, and south to the Cucamonga
8Valley; and
P2 1WHEREAS, Historic vineyards are beautiful and treasured
2survivors that have lived through the ravages of phylloxera,
3economic downturns, consumer popularity fluctuations, and in
4many cases, prohibition and world wars; and
5WHEREAS, These historic vineyards provide an important
6living repository for wine grape budwood and genetic material;
7and
8WHEREAS, Historic vineyards often provide a living window
9on past vineyard practices including, but not limited to,
10head-trained vines and dry farming; and
11WHEREAS, The interplanted field blends of grape varieties
12that were a common practice of the immigrant farmers who planted
13California vineyards in the past characterize an era of agricultural
14practice and impart wine attributes that are uniquely Californian;
15and
16WHEREAS, Fragile older vines are often less productive than
17younger vines and can require special care to maintain; and
18WHEREAS, Most historic vineyards are family owned and exist
19by virtue of the passion of their caretakers; and
20WHEREAS, The wine made from California’s historic vineyards
21continues to delight wine lovers throughout the world and imparts
22prestige to the state as a place to live, work, and visit; now,
23therefore, be it
24Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
25Assembly recognizes the contribution of California’s living historic
26vineyards to the agricultural and social heritage of the state as well
27as to the enjoyment of wine enthusiasts throughout California and
28the world; and be it further
29Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
30of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
