                          ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE
                           Susan Talamantes Eggman, Chair
                   HR 9 (Daly) - As Introduced: February 20, 2013

          SUBJECT : Historic Vineyards.

SUMMARY : Honors the value and importance of historical
          vineyards in California.
Specifically, this resolution makes the following legislative
          findings:

             1) California producing historical vineyards, planted in
the late 19th century through the mid-20th century, make a
significant contribution to the state's economy and
               reputation.

             2) Historic vineyards have survived many difficulties and
provide a living repository for wine grape budwood, and
               genetic material.

             3) Recognizes the importance of interplanted field blends
of grape varieties as a past agricultural practice that
helped impart uniquely Californian attributes in wine.

             4) Many historic vineyards are fragile and require special
care to be maintained, and most historic vineyards are
family owned and exist due to the passion of their
               caretaker.

           FISCAL EFFECT : None

COMMENTS : California winegrape growing has a long and
continuing history, and in the late twentieth century became
recognized as producing some of the world's finest wine. While
wine is made in all fifty of the United States, it is estimated
that up to 90% of American wine is produced in California.
California would be the fourth largest producer of wine in the
world if it were an independent nation.

California's winegrowing history goes back more than 200 years,
and many California winegrowers come from families that have
farmed grapes for several generations. In spite of many
setbacks over their long history, California winegrape growers
