Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 51—Relative to the Jimmy A. Arevalo Memorial Highway.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 51, as introduced, Jones. Jimmy A. Arevalo Memorial Highway.

This measure would designate a portion of State Highway Route 8 in the County of San Diego as the Jimmy A. Arevalo Memorial Highway. The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing that special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs.

P1    1WHEREAS, Jimmy A. Arevalo was born on August 11, 1952,
2in Calexico; and

3WHEREAS, Mr. Arevalo graduated from Calexico High School
4in 1971, served in the United States Army and was honorably
5discharged in 1972, attended Imperial Valley College and later
6San Diego State University, receiving an associate of arts degree
7and a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies, respectively, received
8his teaching credential in 1978, subsequently was awarded a
9master’s degree in public administration from San Diego State
10University in 1980, and received a community college instructor
11credential from the California Community Colleges; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Mr. Arevalo began his lifetime teaching career at
2Dool Elementary School in the Calexico Unified School District
3on January 3, 1978, where he taught for 34 years, most recently
4as a fifth grade teacher; and

5WHEREAS, Mr. Arevalo also taught at Imperial Valley College
6as an adjunct instructor in the English Department, and was
7employed by the Imperial County Office of Education as a migrant
8education principal for the Heber Migrant Summer School
9Program; and

10WHEREAS, Mr. Arevalo has been recognized for his leadership
11skills and outstanding service to the St. Mary’s 4-H Club, Heber
12Migrant Program, El Centro Elementary School District Migrant
13Program, Imperial Valley College, and Calexico Unified School
14District; and

15WHEREAS, Mr. Arevalo was known for his interest in
16aerodynamics, rocketry, and woodworking, among other things,
17was always willing to lend someone a helping hand, and was
18always encouraging his students to continue with their education;
19and

20WHEREAS, On June 11, 2012, Mr. Arevalo was tragically
21killed in a multivehicle crash on State Highway Route 8 near
22Alpine in the County of San Diego involving a suspected drunk
23driver; and

24WHEREAS, Mr. Arevalo is survived by his wife of 30 years
25Silvia, as well as his sons Bernardo and Roberto, and his daughter
26Lisa “Lupita”; and

27WHEREAS, In order to keep Mr. Arevalo’s spirit alive, the
28Calexico Educational Foundation established a scholarship in order
29to grant funding to a Calexico High School senior who has been
30admitted to a four-year accredited university or college, through
31the Jimmy A. Arevalo Memorial Scholarship; and

32WHEREAS, It is therefore appropriate to designate a portion
33of State Highway Route 8 in honor of Jimmy A. Arevalo; now,
34therefore, be it

35Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
36thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby designates the
37portion of State Highway Route 8 between post-miles R27.30 and
38R28.46 in the County of San Diego as the Jimmy A. Arevalo
39Memorial Highway; and be it further

P3    1Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
2to determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the
3signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this
4special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate
5sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it
6further

7Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
8of this resolution to the Department of Transportation and to the
9author for appropriate distribution.
