           SUBJECT  :    Jimmy A. Arevalo Memorial Highway

           DIGEST  :    This resolution names a portion of State Highway  
          Route 8 (SR 8) in San Diego County as the Jimmy A. Arevalo  
          Memorial Highway.

           ANALYSIS  :    This resolution was introduced to honor the life  
          and service of teacher Jimmy A. Arevalo.    

           Background
           
          Jimmy A. Arevalo was born on August 11, 1952, in Calexico.  He  
          graduated from Calexico High School in 1971, served in the  
          United States Army, and was honorably discharged in 1972.  Mr.

          Arevalo earned an associate of arts degree from Imperial Valley  
          College and a bachelor's degree from San Diego State University.  
           He received his teaching credential in 1978, a master's degree  
          in public administration from San Diego State University in  
          1980, and a community college instructor credential from the  
          California Community Colleges.  Mr. Arevalo taught at Dool  
          Elementary School in the Calexico Unified School District for 34  
          years.  He also taught at Imperial Valley College and was a  
          migrant education principal for the Heber Migrant Summer School  
          Program.  On June 11, 2012, Mr. Arevalo stopped to help a driver  
          who had crashed on SR 8 near Alpine in San Diego County and was  
          killed when he was struck by another car.  Mr. Arevalo is  
          survived by his wife, Silvia, his sons, Bernardo and Roberto,  
          and his daughter, Lisa "Lupita."  

          This resolution designates a portion of SR 8 in San Diego County  
          as the Jimmy A. Arevalo Memorial Highway.  This resolution  
          further requests that the Department of Transportation erect  
          appropriate signs upon receiving donations from non-state  
          sources to cover the costs.
