SUBJECT : Sober Graduation Month

DIGEST : This resolution designates May 31, 2013, to June 30,
2013, as Sober Graduation Month and encourages Californians to
participate in this observance and join the Department of
California Highway Patrol (CHP) in supporting efforts to save
lives of young people through a Sober Graduation Month.
ANALYSIS : This resolution makes the following legislative
findings:
1. In 2012, according to the National Center for Statistics and
Analysis, an office of the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration, over 1, 500 drivers between 15 and 20 years
of age were involved in alcohol-related motor vehicle
accidents during the months of May and June.
2. The Sober Graduation Program is an effective, antidrunk
driving campaign geared towards high school seniors; and,
since this program was established, the number of
alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents involving young

people has dramatically declined.
3. Teachers, parents, pupils, civic groups, law enforcement, and
the business community should join together to raise public
awareness of alcohol-related deaths and injuries, and
encourage alcohol-free and drug-free graduation ceremonies.
This resolution designates May 31, 2013, to June 30, 2013, as
Sober Graduation Month and encourages Californians to
participate in this observance and join the CHP in supporting
efforts to save lives of young people through a Sober Graduation
Month.
