This measure would designate September 22, 2013, and September 22, 2014, as “California Business Women’s Day” and would encourage all Californians to celebrate the occasion with appropriate activities.

P1 1WHEREAS, There are approximately 1 million women-owned
2businesses in California and women-owned businesses constitute
348.6 percent of all privately held businesses in California; and
4WHEREAS, Women-owned businesses in California employ
5approximately 2.9 million people and generate approximately $406
6billion in revenue; and
7WHEREAS, In 2012, among the 50 states and Washington,
8D.C., California ranked first in the number of privately held,
9women-owned businesses. Women-owned businesses have grown
10by 51 percent in California with a 56 percent increase in revenue
11for women-owned businesses and a 4 percent increase in
12employment; and
P2 1WHEREAS, California has 12 Fortune 100 companies, all of
2which have at least one woman director, and 75 percent of which
3have two or more women directors; and
4WHEREAS, California ranks first in the nation with the greatest
5number of Hispanic, Asian, and Pacific Islander women-owned
6businesses and fourth for the greatest number of African American
7women-owned businesses; and
8WHEREAS, Minority women-owned businesses comprise 35
9percent of all women-owned businesses in California, making
10California the third leading state where minority women-owned
11businesses comprise the greatest share of all women-owned
12businesses; and
13WHEREAS, September 22 marks the founding date in 1949 of
14the American Business Women’s Association, the mission of which
15is “to bring together businesswomen of diverse occupations and
16to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others
17grow personally and professionally through leadership, education,
18networking support and national recognition”; now, therefore, be
19it
20Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
21thereof concurring, That September 22, 2013, and September 22,
222014, shall be designated as “California Business Women’s Day”
23and all Californians are encouraged to celebrate the occasion with
24appropriate activities; and be it further
25Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly provide copies
26of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
