Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 58—Relative to women in business.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 58, as amended, Beth Gaines. California Business Women’s Day.

This measure would designate September 22, 2013, and September 22, 2014, as “California Business Women’s Day” and would encourage all Californians to celebrate the occasion with appropriate activities.

P2    1WHEREAS, There are approximately 1 million women-owned
2businesses in California and women-owned businesses constitute
348.6 percent of all privately held businesses in California; and

4WHEREAS, Women-owned businesses in California employ
5approximately 2.9 million people and generate approximately $406
6billion in revenue; and

7WHEREAS, In 2012, among the 50 states and Washington,
8D.C., California ranked first in the number of privately held,
9women-owned businesses. Women-owned businesses have grown
10by 51 percent in California with a 56-percent increase in revenue
11for women-owned businesses and a 4-percent increase in
12employment; and

13WHEREAS, California has 12 Fortune 100 companies, all of
14which have at least one woman director, and 75 percent of which
15have two or more women directors; and

16WHEREAS, California ranks first in the nation with the greatest
17number of Hispanic, Asian, and Pacific Islander women-owned
18businesses and fourth for the greatest number of African American
19women-owned businesses; and

20WHEREAS, Minority women-owned businesses comprise 35
21percent of all women-owned businesses in California, making
22California the third leading state where minority women-owned
23businesses comprise the greatest share of all women-owned
24businesses; and

25WHEREAS, September 22 marks the founding date in 1949 of
26the American Business Women’s Association, the mission of which
27is “to bring together businesswomen of diverse occupations and
28to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others
29grow personally and professionally through leadership, education,
30networking support and national recognition”; now, therefore, be
31it

32Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
33thereof concurring,
That September 22, 2013, and September 22,
342014, shall be designated as “California Business Women’s Day”
35and all Californians are encouraged to celebrate the occasion with
36appropriate activities; and be it further

37Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly provide copies
38of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
