This measure would designate a specified portion of Statebegin insert Highwayend insert Route 72 as the Detectives Mike Lane and John Pierce Memorial Highway. The measure would request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

2begin delete School, Anaheim,end deletebegin insert School in Anaheimend insert and joined the Whittier Police
3Department on January 22, 1968, as a cadet, attaining the position
4of police officer on May 23, 1969; and
5WHEREAS, In 1973, Detective Lane was assigned to the
6Whittier Police Department’s Detective Division, Criminal Tactical
7Unit, and Major Crime Investigations; and
8WHEREAS, Detective Lane was alsobegin insert aend insert member of the Southeast
9Burglary Investigation Team from its inception in April 1975, until
P2 1March 4, 1977, when he became a detective in the Whittier Police
2Department’s Investigative Division, Narcotics Detail; and
3WHEREAS, On December 13, 1979, Detective Lane was
4working undercover on a motorcycle theft investigation when he
5was attempting to buy back a stolen motorcycle from a local outlaw
6motorcycle gang when he was confronted by the suspects while
7still in his vehicle. Shots were exchanged and he sustained fatal
8injuries; and
9WHEREAS, Detective John Pierce attended and graduated from
10El Rancho High School and Fullerton City College; and
11WHEREAS, After a stint in the California National Guard,
12Detective Pierce joined the Whittier Police Department on October
132, 1967, as a uniformed patrol officer, and in the early 1970s, he
14served as a liaison officer in the Whittier Police Explorer Post;
15and
16WHEREAS, In 1973, Detective Pierce was promoted to the
17Whittier Police Department’s Investigative Division, assigned to
18narcotics and vice, and later served on the Whittier Police
19Department’s SWAT Team; and
20WHEREAS, In 1976, Detective Pierce attained the rank of agent.
21Detective Pierce also served as a training officer in the Whittier
22Police Department’s Investigative Division; and
23WHEREAS, In April 1977, Detective Pierce was named the
24“California Outstanding Narcotics Officer” by the We Tip
25organization; and
26WHEREAS, On September 21, 1976, while workingbegin insert onend insert an
27undercover investigation regarding the sale of narcotics, Detective
28Pierce was assaulted by two subjects and sustained serious injuries.
29These injuries left him paralyzed from the neck down and
30ultimately resulted in his death on May 18, 1977; and
31WHEREAS, These two heroic police officers, who were killed
32in the line of duty while protecting the community against
33dangerous criminals, will never be forgotten; and
34WHEREAS, Although the Whittier Police Department has lost
35only these two officers in its 94-year history, and the wounds of
36these losses have healed over time, the significance of their
37sacrifices lives on; now, therefore, be it
38Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
39thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the
40portion of Statebegin insert Highwayend insert Route 72 from the western entrance to

9Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
10to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
11signing requirements for the state highway system showing this
12special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate
13sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it
14further
15Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
16of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
17for appropriate distribution.
