SUBJECT : Detective Jeremiah MacKay Memorial Highway
SUMMARY : Designates a portion of State Route (SR) 38 in San
Bernardino County as the "Detective Jeremiah MacKay Memorial
Highway." Specifically, this bill :
1)Recounts the life and accomplishments of Jeremiah MacKay, a
detective with the San Bernardino County Sherriff's Department
who gave his life protecting his community.
2)Designates a portion of SR 38 in San Bernardino County as the
Detective Jeremiah MacKay Memorial Highway from post mile
24.00 to post mile 29.00.
3)Requests that the California Department of Transportation
(Caltrans) determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent
with the signing requirements for the state highway system,
showing the special designation and, upon receiving donations
from non-state sources covering that costs, to erect those
signs.
EXISTING LAW : Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating
and maintaining state highways. This includes the installation
and maintenance of highway signs.
FISCAL EFFECT : Costs to Caltrans to erect the signs are to be
covered by non-state donations.
COMMENTS : Born on June 4, 1977, Detective. MacKay was raised in
Lake Arrowhead, California. He was the older of two siblings
and had a passion for mountain recreation and sports including;
skiing, snowboarding, football and tennis. Detective MacKay
began his career in public service when he joined the San
Bernardino county Sheriff's Department and later served as a
deputy assigned to the Central Detention Center, Central
Station, and Sheriff Training Facility all in San Bernardino and
at the Twin Peaks station in Twin Peaks California. Detective
MacKay was also a member of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's
Department Honor Guard. He married his wife Lynette on November

9, 2011.
On February 12, 2013, Detective MacKay was shot and killed by
Christopher Dorner during the manhunt for the rogue ex-Los
Angeles Police Department officer. Detective MacKay gave his
life protecting his community and is survived by his wife
Lynette and two step children, Kaitlyn and Cayden. This bill
designating specific portion of SR 38 in honor of Detective
MacKay acknowledges the sacrifice Detective MacKay to protect
the citizens of San Bernardino County.
