Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 69—Relative to the CHP Officer Dean Esquibel Memorial Bridge.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 69, as amended, Salas. CHP Officer Dean Esquibel Memorial Bridge.

This measure would designate the Cross Creek Bridge in the County of Kings as the CHP Officer Dean Esquibel Memorial Bridge. The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation, and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

P1    1WHEREAS, CHP Officer Dean Jose Esquibel was born July
231, 1962 to Joan and Alex Esquibel, in Greensboro, North Carolina;
3and

4WHEREAS, Officer Esquibel graduated from Orosi High School
5in 1980, joined the Police Academy through the College of the
6Sequoias shortly thereafter, and was assigned to the Orange Cove
7Police Department upon graduation; and

8WHEREAS, Officer Esquibel worked as an Orange Cove Police
9Officer and did undercover work for the Dinuba Police Department
10prior to becoming a California Highway Patrol Officer; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Officer Dean Esquibel married his best friend,
2Christine Lewis, on June 21, 1981, and had a wonderful son, Justin,
3born August 22, 1983; and

4WHEREAS, In his spare time, Officer Esquibel enjoyed fishing,
5bike riding, and spending time with his family; and

6WHEREAS, Officer Esquibel entered the Department of the
7California Highway Patrol Academy on April 2, 1984, and upon
8graduation was assigned to the Hanford Area Office, where he
9proudly served the department for approximately one year; and

10WHEREAS, Officer Esquibel, badge number 11289, while
11providing backup in a high-speed pursuit of a fleeing motorcyclist
12on State Route 198, was forced to veer off the road, causing his
13patrol car to burst into flames; and

14WHEREAS, The impact of the collision pinned Officer Esquibel
15inside his patrol car, and, although he was rescued by fellow CHP
16Officer De La Cruz shortly thereafter, Officer Esquibel succumbed
17to his injuries two weeksbegin delete later,end deletebegin insert laterend insert on August 21, 1985; and

18WHEREAS, Officer Esquibel was a hardworking, dedicated
19officer who loved his job, enjoyed the people he worked with, and
20was known for being a loyal family man and a wonderful father
21and husband; and

22WHEREAS, He is survived by his wife and son who were his
23greatest joys; and

24WHEREAS, In recognition of Officer Esquibel’s great
25contributions and sacrifice in serving the California Highway Patrol
26and the citizens of California, it would be fitting to designate the
27Cross Creek Bridge in the County of Kings in his honor; now,
28therefore, be it

29Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
30thereof concurring,
That the Legislature herebybegin delete designateend delete
31begin insert designatesend insert the Cross Creek Bridgebegin insert, Bridge No. 45-06,end insert on State
32Route 198, in the County of Kings, as the CHP Officer Dean
33Esquibel Memorial Bridge; and be it further

34Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
35to determine the cost of erecting the appropriate signs, consistent
36with the signing requirements for the state highway system,
37showing this special designation, and, upon receiving donations
38from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs; and
39be it further

2of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
3for appropriate distribution.
