          SUBJECT  :  CHP Officer Dean Esquibel Memorial Bridge

           SUMMARY  :  Designates the Cross Creek Bridge in Kings County,  
          California as the "CHP Officer Dean Esquibel Memorial Bridge."   
          Specifically,  this bill  :  

          1)Recounts the lifetime accomplishments of Officer Dean  
            Esquibel, a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer killed  
            while in pursuit of a fleeing motorcyclist.  

          2)Designates the Cross Creek Bridge (Bridge No. 45-06) on State  
            Route (SR) 198 in Kings County, California as the "CHP Officer  
            Dean Esquibel Memorial Bridge.  

          3)Requests that the California Department of Transportation  
            (Caltrans) determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent  
            with the signing requirements for the state highway system,  
            showing the special designation and, upon receiving donations  
            from non-state sources covering that cost, to erect those  
            signs.  

           EXISTING LAW  :  Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating  
          and maintaining state highways. This includes the installation  
          and maintenance of highway signs.  

           FISCAL EFFECT  :  Costs to Caltrans to erect the signs are to be  
          covered by non-state donations.  

           COMMENTS  :  Born on July 31, 1962 to Joan and Alex Esquibel in  
          Greensboro, North Carolina, Officer Esquibel graduated from  
          Orosi High School in 1980.  He joined the Police Academy and  
          upon graduation was assigned to the Orange Cove Police  
          Department.  Officer Esquibel performed undercover work for the  
          Dinuba Police Department prior to joining the CHP in 1984 where  
          he proudly served for one year.  Officer Esquibel was fatally  
          wounded in a collision that occurred while he was in a  
          high-speed pursuit of a motorcyclist.  Officer Esquibel was a  
          hardworking, dedicated officer who loved his job and co-workers  
          and was known as being a loving husband and father.  Officer

          Esquibel is survived by his wife Christine and their son Justin.
