This measure would proclaim October 5, 2013, as California Firefighters Memorial Day.

P1 1WHEREAS, The California Firefighters Memorial, located on
2the grounds of the State Capitol, serves to honor and commemorate
3California firefighters who unwaveringly serve our great state with
4pride, courage, and honor; and
5WHEREAS, The California Firefighters Memorial is also a
6symbol of gratitude and appreciation to the men and women of
7the fire service who put their lives on the line each day to protect
8the people, property, and beauty of California; and
9WHEREAS, Each of the over 1,200 names engraved on the
10brushed limestone walls of the California Firefighters Memorial
11serves as a tribute to the finest and bravest of our state who have
12made the ultimate sacrifice as firefighters; and
13WHEREAS, Many of the fallen firefighters whose names adorn
14the California Firefighters Memorial suffered and ultimately
15succumbed to diseases, such as cancer, as a result of the hazardous
P2 1nature of their work, including routine exposure to toxic chemicals;
2and
3WHEREAS, On October 5, 2013, firefighters and their families
4from throughout the state will gather in Sacramento with their
5fellow Californians for the California Firefighters Memorial
6Ceremony 2013 to honor the men and women of the fire service
7who have given their lives to protect California; now, therefore,
8be it
9Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
10thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby proclaims October
115, 2013, as Firefighters Memorial Day, and urges Californians to
12remember firefighters who have given their lives in the line of
13duty and to express appreciation to firefighters who continue to
14protect our families; and be it further
15Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
16of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
