Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 72—Relative to California Firefighters Memorial Day.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 72, as amended, Quirk-Silva. California Firefighters Memorial Day.

This measure would proclaim October 5, 2013, as California Firefighters Memorial Day.

P1    1WHEREAS, The California Firefighters Memorial, located on
2the grounds of the State Capitol, serves to honor and commemorate
3California firefighters who unwaveringly serve our great state with
4pride, courage, and honor; and

P2    1WHEREAS, The California Firefighters Memorial is also a
2symbol of gratitude and appreciation to the men and women of
3the fire service who put their lives on the line each day to protect
4the people, property, and beauty of California; and

5WHEREAS, Each of the over 1,200 names engraved on the
6brushed limestone walls of the California Firefighters Memorial
7serves as a tribute to the finest and bravest of our state who have
8made the ultimate sacrifice as firefighters; and

9WHEREAS, Many of the fallen firefighters whose names adorn
10the California Firefighters Memorial suffered and ultimately
11succumbed to diseases, such as cancer, as a result of the hazardous
12nature of their work, including routine exposure to toxic chemicals;
13and

14WHEREAS, On October 5, 2013, firefighters and their families
15from throughout the state will gather in Sacramento with their
16fellow Californians for the California Firefighters Memorial
17Ceremony 2013 to honor the men and women of the fire service
18who have given their lives to protect California; now, therefore,
19be it

20Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
21thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby proclaims October
225, 2013, as Firefighters Memorial Day, and urges Californians to
23remember firefighters who have given their lives in the line of
24duty and to express appreciation to firefighters who continue to
25protect our families; and be it further

26Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
27of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
