Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 84—Relative to emergency medical services.

ACR 84, as amended, Rodriguez. Emergency Medical Services Week.

This measure would proclaim the week of May 18, 2014, through May 24, 2014, as Emergency Medical Services Week.

P1    1WHEREAS, It is estimated that there are over 840,000
2emergency medical services personnel in the United States,
3including overbegin delete 15,000end deletebegin insert 80,000end insert in the State of California; and

4WHEREAS, Emergency medical services are a vital public
5service and the members of emergency medical services teams are
6ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day,
7seven days a week; and

8WHEREAS, The emergency medical services system consists
9of emergency physicians, emergency nurses, emergency medical
P2    1technicians, paramedics, firefighters, educators, administrators,
2and others; and

3WHEREAS, The members of emergency medical services teams,
4whether career or volunteer, engage in thousands of hours of
5specialized training and continuing education to enhance their
6lifesaving skills; and

7WHEREAS, Approximately 25 to 30 million patients nationwide
8and over two million patients throughout California receive
9emergency medical services each year; and

10WHEREAS, Access to quality emergency medical care
11dramatically improves the survival and recovery rates of those
12who experience sudden illness or injury; and

13WHEREAS, The American College of Emergency Physicians
14was instrumental in establishing National Emergency Medical
15Services Week to honor the lifesaving efforts of emergency medical
16services personnel; and

17WHEREAS, President Gerald Ford proclaimed the first
18Emergency Medical Services Week in November of 1974; and

19WHEREAS, This is the 40th anniversary of National Emergency
20Medical Services Week; and

21WHEREAS, The theme of Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
22Week is “EMS: Dedicated for Life.” This theme has a dual
23meaning; first, it demonstrates that emergency medical services
24providers are dedicated to saving lives, and second, it expresses
25the sense of duty to aid others that is inherent in the profession
26and stays with an emergency medical services provider for life;

28WHEREAS, It is appropriate to recognize the value and
29accomplishments of emergency medical services personnel by
30designating Emergency Medical Services Week in California;

32Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
33thereof concurring,
That the Legislature proclaims the week of
34May 18, 2014, through May 24, 2014, as Emergency Medical
35Services Week in California; and be it further

36Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
37of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
