Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 84—Relative to emergency medical services.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 84, as amended, Rodriguez. Emergency Medical Services Week.

This measure would proclaim the week of May 18, 2014, through May 24, 2014, as Emergency Medical Services Week.

P2    1WHEREAS, It is estimated that there are over 840,000
2emergency medical services personnel in the United States,
3including over 80,000 in the State of California; and

4WHEREAS, Emergency medical services are a vital public
5service and the members of emergency medical services teams are
6ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day,
7seven days a week; and

8WHEREAS, The emergency medical services system consists
9of emergency physicians, emergency nurses, emergency medical
10technicians, paramedics, firefighters, educators, administrators,
11and others; and

12WHEREAS, The members of emergency medical services teams,
13whether career or volunteer, engage in thousands of hours of
14specialized training and continuing education to enhance their
15lifesaving skills; and

16WHEREAS, Approximately 25 to 30 million patients nationwide
17and over two million patients throughout California receive
18emergency medical services each year; and

19WHEREAS, Access to quality emergency medical care
20dramatically improves the survival and recovery rates of those
21who experience sudden illness or injury; and

22WHEREAS, The American College of Emergency Physicians
23was instrumental in establishing National Emergency Medical
24Services Week to honor the lifesaving efforts of emergency medical
25services personnel; and

26WHEREAS, President Gerald Ford proclaimed the first
27Emergency Medical Services Week in November of 1974; and

28WHEREAS, This is the 40th anniversary of National Emergency
29Medical Services Week; and

30WHEREAS, The theme of Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
31Week is “EMS: Dedicated for Life.” This theme has a dual
32meaning; first, it demonstrates that emergency medical services
33providers are dedicated to saving lives, and second, it expresses
34the sense of duty to aid others that is inherent in the profession
35and stays with an emergency medical services provider for life;
36and

37WHEREAS, It is appropriate to recognize the value and
38accomplishments of emergency medical services personnel by
39designating Emergency Medical Services Week in California;
40now, therefore, be it

P3    1Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
2thereof concurring,
That the Legislature proclaims the week of
3May 18, 2014, through May 24, 2014, as Emergency Medical
4Services Week in California; and be it further

5Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
6of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
