SUBJECT : Memorial Highway Plaque
SUMMARY : Calls for the erection of a memorial plaque on State
Route (SR) 132 to commemorate United States Secret Service
Agents Donald W. Robinson, Donald A. Bejcek, and George P.
LaBarge. Specifically, this bill :
1)Describes the vehicular accident that killed United States
Secret Service Agents Donald W. Robinson, Donald A. Bejcek,
and George P. LaBarge.
2)Authorizes the placement of a permanent memorial plaque on SR
132 in Mariposa County, California between highway marker 300
and 371.
3)Requests the California Department of Transportation
(Caltrans) to determine the cost of an appropriate plaque,
consistent with the signing requirements for a state highway
system, showing the special designation and, upon receiving
donations from non-state sources covering that cost, erect the
plaque.
EXISTING LAW : Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating
and maintaining state highways including the installation and
maintenance of highway signs.
FISCAL EFFECT : Costs to make and erect the appropriate plaque
is covered by donations.
COMMENTS : On March 5, 1983, United States Secret Service
Special Agents Donald W. Robinson, 38 years old of Newark, New
Jersey; Donald A. Bejcek, 29 years old of Chicago, Illinois; and
George P. LaBarge, 41 years old, of Dayton, Ohio were en route
to their assignment to protect the life of the Queen Elizabeth
II of the United Kingdom during her official visit to the
Yosemite Valley. The three agents were killed when their
vehicle collided head-on with a Mariposa County Sherriff's
Department patrol car on SR 132 in Mariposa County, California.

This resolution calls for the erection of a memorial plaque at
the site of the accident which is located between post mile 300,
located west of the Jalapa Road east bound lane, and post mile
371, located at the county line of Mariposa and Tuolumne County
east bound lane. This resolution further requests that Caltrans
erect the plaque upon receiving donations from non-state sources
to cover the costs.
