State Highway Route 132: memorial plaque
DESCRIPTION:
This resolution authorizes the Department of Transportation
(Caltrans) to place a permanent plaque memorializing U.S. Secret
Service agents Donald W. Robinson, Donald A. Bejcek, and George
P. LeBarge at the location of the accident in which they died in
1983 on State Route (SR) 132 at the Mariposa-Tuolumne county
line.
ANALYSIS:
Existing law requires Caltrans the responsibility to maintain
and operate and maintaining state highways, including the
installation and maintenance of monuments and plaques placed in
the highway right-of-way.
This resolution authorizes Caltrans to place a permanent
memorial plaque on SR 132 at the site of a 1983 accident on the
Mariposa-Tuolumne county line where Secret Service agents Donald
W. Robinson, Donald A. Bejcek, and George P. LeBarge died. The
resolution further requests that Caltrans install the plaque
upon receiving donations from non-state sources to cover the
costs.
COMMENTS:
Purpose . On March 5, 1983, three United States Secret Service
special agents died in a vehicle accident en route to their
assignment to protect the life of Queen Elizabeth II of the
United Kingdom during her official visit to the Yosemite Valley.
The three agents were traveling from Merced to Yosemite Valley
when their vehicle collided head-on with a Mariposa County
Sherriff's Department patrol car on SR 132 in Mariposa County,
California. The three agents were Donald W. Robinson, who was

38 years old and from Newark, New Jersey; Donald A. Bejcek, who
was 29 years old and from Chicago, Illinois; and George P.
LaBarge, who was 41 years old and from Dayton, Ohio.
