SUBJECT : State Highway Route 132: memorial plaque

           SOURCE : Author

DIGEST : This resolution authorizes the Department of
Transportation (Caltrans) to place a permanent plaque
memorializing U.S. Secret Service agents Donald W. Robinson,
Donald A. Bejcek, and George P. LeBarge at the location of the
accident in which they died in 1983 on State Route (SR) 132 at
          the Mariposa-Tuolumne county line.

ANALYSIS : On March 5, 1983, three United States Secret
Service special agents died in a vehicle accident en route to
their assignment to protect the life of Queen Elizabeth II of
the United Kingdom during her official visit to the Yosemite
Valley. The three agents were traveling from Merced to Yosemite
                                                                CONTINUED

                                                                     Page

Valley when their vehicle collided head-on with a Mariposa
County Sherriff's Department patrol car on SR 132 in Mariposa
County, California. The three agents were Donald W. Robinson,
who was 38 years old and from Newark, New Jersey; Donald A.
Bejcek, who was 29 years old and from Chicago, Illinois; and
George P. LaBarge, who was 41 years old and from Dayton, Ohio.

This resolution authorizes Caltrans to place a permanent
memorial plaque on SR 132 at the site of a 1983 accident on the
Mariposa-Tuolumne county line where Secret Service agents Donald
          W. Robinson, Donald A. Bejcek, and George P. LeBarge died. The
resolution further requests that Caltrans install the plaque
upon receiving donations from non-state sources to cover the
          costs.
